Evening Book Club
Star of the Sea, By Elias Khoury
Facilitated by Louise Meller
FICTION, 417 pages
Available in Paperback and Kindle
Star of the Sea is the second installment of a brilliant trilogy—an epic tale of love, survival, and ongoing devastation.
Weaving history, memory, and poetry, this unforgettable novel—and the 1st book in a trilogy—provides a sprawling memorial to the Nakba and the strangled lives left in its wake.
Star of the Sea. Adam Dannoun’s story is one of beginnings. Born in a war-torn Israel, Adam dreams of becoming a writer. He is just an infant when Jewish forces uproot and massacre thousands of Palestinians in the 1948 Nakba, including his own father. Adam’s mother, crumbling with loss, takes her son to Haifa and remarries. Adam flees this lifeless home and writes himself a second beginning. With nothing but his father’s will and the image of his mother at the doorway, Adam is born again into the streets of Haifa.

Shabbat Hadasha: A New Shabbat Morning Experience
We’re going to begin to offer a new kind of prayer experience once a month on Saturday mornings, in lieu of our usual morning service, which we’re calling Shabbat Hadasha: a new Shabbat.Come early for an optional guided meditation in the sanctuary (9:15–10:00 am) before the service begins. Come curious and stay for kiddush lunch.
The intention of this service is to be able to enter into fewer words of liturgy but with more depth. We’ll spend time through chant, meditation, learning, and reflection with some of the core ideas within the prayers, opening them up and making them more accessible to all. We’ll offer a Torah service with a shorter Torah reading so that we can go more in depth with the verses themselves and explore what wisdom they might have to offer in our lives, right now.
Morning Minyan
Join us at 9am on Sunday mornings for "mindfulness minyan." We will daven through selected parts of the liturgy to allow for more spaciousness, singing, meditation, and movement. With 1 in every 9 Georgians at risk of hunger, the number of people requesting emergency food assistance continues to grow. If every volunteer visiting our Hunger Action Center brings just two cans of food, we would be able to provide approximately 2,750 additional meals each month! The Hunger Action Center provides a great hands-on experience in a diverse and social atmosphere. Groups and individual volunteers come together to inspect, sort, and pack quality grocery donations to prepare for distribution to nearly 700 partner agencies across Georgia. Dress Code: Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes are required, with sneakers or work boots recommended. Flip flops, Crocs, sandals or heeled shoes are not allowed. Please wear comfortable clothing which you do not mind getting a bit rumpled. Some volunteers will be sorting refrigerated product. Please wear long pants and bring a sweatshirt or light jacket with you. In the event you are working elsewhere, we do have lockers onsite to place your outerwear. Food Donations: *Please consider bringing as many nonperishable items as you can! You're already making a tremendous difference by volunteering. Think how much that can be magnified by grabbing a couple of food items to bring with you when you come! We're always in need of natural peanut butter, canned chicken, and canned fruits & vegetables.

SciFi Book Club
Love a good story with a sci-fi or fantasy twist? Join us for our Jewish Sci-Fi Book Club! We meet monthly to dive into fascinating reads that blend imagination with Jewish culture, history, and mythology. Whether you're a sci-fi enthusiast or simply curious, you’re invited to share your thoughts, explore new ideas, and connect with fellow book lovers.
Please join us after kiddush. No need to finish the book—everyone is welcome to stop by and join the conversation!
Monthly Book Selection:
Our book for February is Is Superman Circumcised?: The Complete Jewish History of the World's Greatest Hero by Roy Schwartz.
