This family class provides a context for the b'nai mitzvah learning process and for the big day itself, giving tweens and their parents an opportunity to think about the bigger picture questions of meaning that can sometimes get buried in the details of daily practice.

Questions like ...

  • Why are we doing this? Why do lifecycles exist, why this one, and why now?
  • What is Torah, if it's not a history book? Many of our children developed a relationship to Torah as younger children that doesn't work for them anymore at this point. It needs to shift and grow as they mature.
  • Is God real? Does God do stuff and say stuff as the Torah stories seem to describe? Many of our children are ready to consider more nuanced Jewish ideas about God they may never have heard of.
  • Why do we pray the way we do ... and why do we pray at all?
  • What does Judaism ask of me in terms of serving the world around me? How can I wrap my head around helping with the really big problems our world faces?

Yes, 11 and 12 year olds are very deep thinkers! Needless to say, none of these have simple answers. But meeting together at the shul to affirm the questions, wrestle with them, and hear how those before us have wrestled with them is some of the best modeling of Judaism that we can do.  It's really a beautiful class, and a beautiful time to spend together as a family and as a cohort.

Where: In person at Or Hadash. Barring unforeseen circumstances, we do not plan to do Zoom.

Who: Rabbi Lauren and Dr. Amy co-teach, and the class is for all Or Hadash 6th graders and their parents, both day school families and Machon Hadash families

Cost: The cost is rolled into the Or Hadash b'nai mitzvah fee - nothing additional!

Is this required?

We are not going to hunt you down or cancel your date if you have conflict. That said, having worked really closely with many Or Hadash b'nai mitzvah over the past 18 months, we can tell you that these conversations are really important. The intensity of b'nai mitzvah preparation can bring these big picture questions to a head in a very good way if we are there to meet them. These conversations help bridge our children from a young child's relationship to Judaism into a more sophisticated relationship that can sustain them during this next period of their lives.
