Men’s Club President’s Welcome Message PDF Print E-mail

Thank you for giving me a moment of your time to let you know about the new COH Men’s Club.

First, as an arm of the Shul, the Men’s Club provides service to Congregation Or Hadash. We coordinate and provide ushers for the High Holy Days and we contribute to making a Minyan every Tuesday morning. With your help, we will continue and expand these and other services to Or Hadash.

Second, as a Jewish organization, we are motivated by Jewish ethics, and so we donate time and money to our Shul and to the Atlanta community. We manned a Homeless Men’s Shelter on Christmas eve and night to allow the Staff to be with their families. We will coordinate the Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle boxing event. We will also host an annual Men’s Club Shabbat, with members of the Club leading services. With your help, we will continue to expand our tzedakah of time and money. Third, as a group of men interested in a wide array of topics, your Men’s Club co-sponsored along with Hadassah, a successful Male Medical Forum, which we will hold on a regular basis on differing topics. We will also schedule financial planning and estate planning forums. With your help, we will bring interesting speakers to spur stimulating  conversation at COH. Finally, as a social club, your Men’s Club has fun! We will be hosting poker tournaments, social networking get-togethers and enjoy Braves, Thrashers, Falcons and Hawks games. We also host the Single Malt Scotch Whiskey l’chaim after Shabbat Tefillot.

We look forward to your involvement, financially and otherwise, in your Men’s Club this coming year. Complete and send in your Membership Application today and be among the first to receive our new and distinctive Men’s Club Kippah!

…b’Shalom,

Stan Schnitzer, President

Don’t Miss Our COH Men’s Club Programming for 2010

Men’s Club has a lot of programming for the men and members of Congregation Or Hadash. Mark your calendars and follow the links to participate. Oh, and if you’re not already a member, download the Membership Application and send it with your check to our treasurer, John Sampson.

· Jan. 10 – All About Tefilin – Learn all about Tefilin – what’s in the black boxes – and to wrap. This will help you get ready for the Worldwide Wrap, an FJMC program that involves Jewish men – and women – around the world. Minyan at 9:30 a.m. with program to follow.

· Feb. 7 – Worldwide Wrap with a Special Guest Speaker – This is the FJMC program, featuring a Colombian connection. Michael Abadi, our FJMC liaison officer for Latin America and Masorti Olami will be our guest speaker to talk about FJMC activity in Latin America, including the affiliation of our first Men’s Club in Chile. As a special feature, we plan to “simulcast” our minyan and program with a congregation in Colombia – and maybe one in Toronto, too. This will make our Worldwide Wrap a truly international event. Look for more details. The program begins with minyan at 9:30, but plan to come early for help in wrapping Tefilin. The program is open to the entire congregation. · Feb. 19-21 – Anshei Darom Region Retreat at Camp Ramah Darom – Join us for our11th annual retreat at Camp Ramah Darom. This is acknowledged by many as the best region retreat in the FJMC, featuring prayer, study and a lot of brotherhood with Jewish men from the Southeast and guests from elsewhere. FJMC International President Mark Berlin will be our special guest this year along rabbis from many member clubs. Contact Doug Friedman  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information and registration. The cost is $190 for the weekend – and includes all meals.

· Feb. 26-27 – Men’s Club Shabbat – Join us for a very special Shabbat. Men’s Club members will help lead services for Shabbat Zachor, which will lead up to the COH Purim celebration that night. Keep an eye out for more information, but if you want to participate – davening, readings in Hebrew or English or reading from the Torah –  contact event co-chair Paul Flexner  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. · April 10 – Yom Ha Shoah Presentation – Our Club vice president Steve Rothschild will give a special talk about his father’s diaries with impressions from being one of the first US soldiers to enter a concentration camp during World War II. His talk is part of the Men’s Club’s Yom Ha Shoah Yellow Candle Program in conjunction with FJMC. Men’s Club will distribute special yartzeit candles (made in Israel) as part of an educational program to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive teach about tolerance.

· May 16 – Hearing Men’s Voices program for men only. We’re still in the planning stages on this one, but keep an eye out for information.
