American Religion October 13 - Dwellers vs. Seekers
Sociologists of Religion have noted how the nature of American religiosity has changed from mid-century, when most Americans chose to settle down within a particular faith tradition, to the late-20th century, when the religious ethos was to experiment and "try on" various religious identities. We will explore this phenomenon in depth, and trace its impact on changes in American Judaism over the last 25 years. October 27 - Youth and Religion The most far-reaching and thorough study of youth and religion in America was undertaken in the late 1990s, and its findings continue to be analyzed and talked about. In this talk, we will review many of the findings of the research team, and discuss to what extent American Jewish youth are part of, or distinct from, these trends. November 10 - Emergent Adults: 18-36 Over the last three decades, sociologists have noted that the traditional indications of adulthood in America, beginning a career, starting a family and buying a home, now take place for many Americans at a later age and over a longer period of time. We will explore this recent trend, and discuss its impact on American Judaism. All Classes held at COH at the Weber School
