First days are both exhilarating and overwhelming. A new school or job? New neighborhood or home? New spouse or children? NEW SYNAGOGUE? These transitions always pose the question, “Do I really fit in?” At Or Hadash, we are committed to ensuring that all new members have easy access to fitting in. One important way we help do this is through a volunteer Buddy System. This is your chance to share your enthusiasm, knowledge and friendship with a new Congregation Or Hadash (COH) member. Last year we launched the COH Buddy System and it was a success. I thank everyone who participated. Now with a new year upon us, and the prospect of new member families, I would like to extend the invitation to ‘Be a Buddy’ again to refresh and expand our list. Here is how it works. The membership committee has created a database of folks who have volunteered to be a Buddy. The database is organized to reflect the various demographics we represent (age, married/single, children/none, interests, religious school, residence neighborhood). When new people join Or Hadash, we offer them the option of having a Buddy family, and if interested, we match them with a Buddy from the list and facilitate an introduction. Then all the ‘Buddy’ has to do is make a plan with the new member to get together: attend a service or another Or Hadash program or event, or share a Sabbath meal. Whatever works. Then, at minimum, the ‘Buddy’ stays in touch with the new member on a monthly basis for up to 6 months to continue to build their Or Hadash connection and address any questions or concerns.
